Several years ago, my wife, Cheri, and I took a USPS basic boating course. We learned a lot, met some great people and joined Las Vegas Sail & Power Squadron.
When we retire, we plan to travel as far as we can on our boat, so we joined USPS to gain the boating skills and knowledge we’d need for the journey.
Soon after joining, we took classes and worked our way through Sailing, Seamanship and Engine Maintenance in our first year.
While Cheri took a break to organize squadron meetings and events and to serve as District 13 conference chair, I continued my USPS education with Marine Electronics, Piloting and Advanced Piloting. These challenging courses taught me the skills I will need for a lifetime of boating.
Being able to read and understand a chart, plot a course and safely navigate to your destination make you a better boater and allow you to venture farther out on the water.
After Advanced Piloting, I took the Weather course. A must for serious boaters, the course teaches you to be prepared on the water and when not to go out at all.
USPS education is professional in both content and presentation. I’ve enjoyed taking classes and meeting others who share my love of boating. The knowledge I’ve gained has made me a better, more confident boater.
I encourage everyone to attend a class or seminar. Not only will you become a better, safer boater, but you’ll also meet a great group of people willing to help you along the way.
See you in class! –Derk J. Boss
