District 5 has held Cooperative Charting workshops for 31 years, but this year’s workshop proved so effective in content and format that it just might serve as a model for others.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration hosted the daylong event at its Atlantic Marine Operations Center in Norfolk, Va., on 5 May 2007.
Class topics included depth surveys, range line surveys, Coast Pilot updates, nautical chart updates and small-craft facility updates.
The 40 workshop participants got hands-on computer experience using Maptech’s Chart Navigator software to create depth survey routes, and Depth Wiz and CCWeb to transfer files and analyze data. They also got on-the-water training and experience using the latest equipment for conducting depth surveys aboard the boats of two D/5 couples, the O’Donnells and Uries.
District 5’s Steve Leishman gave presentations on submitting Small Craft Facilities, Coast Pilot and Nautical Chart update reports. Bob Beltz spoke about creating survey routes using Chart Navigator, and Dan Patke demonstrated data transfer between a PC and GPS. —J. Robert Baechle
