Gearing up for safe boating week

This year’s North American Safe Boating Campaign, which kicks off with National Safe Boating Week 19-25 May, will focus on trailer boaters and anglers.

If you’re wondering why you didn’t receive a campaign kit, it’s because the NSBC now sends postcards with instructions for ordering materials at www.safeboatingcampaign.com. The money saved on postage goes toward projects to strengthen the campaign and save lives.

If your squadron or district works with the media during National Safe Boating Week, you can request media packets containing press releases, boating statistics, story ideas, public service announcements, talking points, B-roll footage, radio scripts and contact information. Enter Wear It! contest

Themed “Wear It!,” the 2007 North American Safe Boating Campaign urges boaters to always wear a life jacket on the water.

Underscoring this vital message, this year’s campaign will again feature the Be A Survivor! contest. Introduced in 2006, the contest invites individuals to submit personal accounts of how life jackets have made a difference in their boating experience. Entries may be submitted between 19 May and 4 Sept. to www.safeboatingcampaign.com or at any West Marine store.

Winners will be announced on 2 Oct. Finalists will receive prizes courtesy of West Marine, and winning entries could be published in future editions of the National Safe Boating Council’s book, Saved by the Jacket.
