Line handlers

By Craig Grosby

Preventing line chafe has been important since the bygone days of clipper ships. Although today’s new synthetic lines are stronger, lighter, less prone to UV damage and better at resisting chafe, they can still wear surprisingly quickly. It’s only a matter of time until a line rubbing against a cleat, bow roller, piling or mooring ring will chafe.

Secure Removable Chafe Guards

Secure Removable Chafe Guards

$29.99 + S&H

Over the past 30 years, I’ve tried numerous things to prevent line chafing, including garden hose, fire hose, plastic tubing, radiator hose and tape.

I didn’t think there was such a thing as the perfect chafe guard until I tried the Secure Removable Chafe Guards from Davis Instruments. The package includes two 16-inch chafe guards that fit 3/8- to 7/8-inch lines (10-23 mm).

When you unwrap the chafe guard, notice the Velcro fasteners on the inside. Eliminating the need for additional ties or strings, these fasteners securely grip the line to keep the guard in place without sliding or moving whatsoever.

The instructions couldn’t be simpler: Lay the line and guard on a flat surface if possible. Starting at the edge where the Velcro strips are sewn together, roll the line and guard together snugly. Interlock the Velcro strips. Face the seam away from any bend where the line turns around a cleat or roller.

I always feared damage to my boat from a spring line that chafed through. Now I sleep better at night knowing these guards are protecting my lines. This product is worth every cent. ship's wheel dingbat
